SMCC wraps up first semester

The Southern Maine Community College men’s basketball team finished the 2013 portion of its schedule 12-3 (6-1 in conference) after a 90-86 overtime loss at Vaughn College in New York City Saturday. Tong Akot had 18 points and 17 rebounds in defeat. Jose Nouchanthavong added 19 points. The women ended the calendar year 9-4 (6-1 in conference) after a loss at Briarcliffe, N.Y. (73-60) and a decisive victory at Vaughn College (93-15). Danielle McCusker had 17 points in both games. The Seawolves are back in action Jan. 10 at the College of St. Joe’s.

Running winter strength program upcoming

Maine Running Hall of Famer Brian “Ziggy” Gillespie, the cross country and track coach at Waynflete School, is holding an eight-week winter strength program for runners of all levels of ability from Jan. 8 through Feb. 26. Runners meet on Wednesdays at 6 p.m., at the Maine Running Company for easy 440s on the Portland Trails course and Saturdays at 8 a.m. at the Maine Running Company for a one-hour group run.
