SMCC rolls on

On the heels of longtime men’s coach and athletic director Matt Richards achieving his 200th career victory with the program, the Southern Maine Community College Seawolves improved to 18-6 overall (12-2 in the Yankee Small College Conference) with recent wins over visiting Unity College (121-84) and U. Maine-Presque Isle (86-75). Tong Akot had a team-high 22 points versus Unity. In the win over UMPI, Jose Nouchanthavong had 16 points and Jacob Loveridge added 14. SMCC’s women beat Unity, 91-24 (Danielle McCusker had 18 points and Esther Palmieri added 14), and lost to UMPI, 72-54 (despite 11 points from Maria Veino) to fall to 15-6 overall (11-1 in conference). The Seawolves hosted NMCC Tuesday and went to rival New Hampshire Technical Institute Thursday before hosting U. Maine-Machias Saturday. A showdown at Central Maine CC looms next Wednesday.

Umpiring classes upcoming

The Western Maine Baseball Umpires Association is holding certification classes for schools and leagues above the Little League level in Cumberland and York Counties. Classes run four consecutive Sundays beginning Feb. 9. FMI, 653-8736 or

Pickleball Classic upcoming

The 2014 Maine Pickleball Classic, a USAPA sanctioned event, will be held Sunday beginning at 8:30 a.m., at Deering High School in Portland. There will be under-60 and over-60 divisions with men’s doubles, women’s doubles and mixed doubles. Admission is free.
