SMCC keeps winning
The Southern Maine Community College Seawolves men’s basketball team extended its win streak to four last week with a pair of victories. After a trip to Northern Maine CC was postponed by bad weather, the Seawolves won at rival New Hampshire Technical Institute (103-90) and home over U. Maine-Machias (94-60). Against NHTI, Jose Nouchanthavong (who was named the conference’s Player of the Week) had 27 points as SMCC swept NHTI for the first time in coach Matt Richards’ 11-year tenure. Jordan DeRosby had a team-high 16 points off the bench versus UMM, as the Seawolves improved to 20-6 overall and 13-2 in Yankee Small College Conference play. The SMCC women improved to 17-6 (12-1 in conference) after beating host NHTI (81-66) and visiting UMM (82-59). Nyalieb Deng had 22 points and Danielle McCusker added 17 against NHTI. In the win over UMM, the Seawolves were paced by 16 from Deng, 15 from McCusker and 12 from Esther Palmieri. After going to biggest-rival-of-all Central Maine Community College Wednesday, SMCC wraps up the regular season Saturday at home versus Vermont Tech. The YSCC playoffs begin Feb. 20.
Conway 3-on-3 Classic upcoming
The inaugural 3-on-3-for-B Conway Classic, a 3-on-3 basketball tournament to raise funds for the Brendan Conway Memorial Scholarship at Deering High School, in honor of the school’s former standout athlete, coach and athletic director, who passed away at the far-too-young age of 34 in November, will be held Saturday, March 8. Registration begins at 9 a.m., with games starting at 9:30. A fourth player can participate as an optional substitute. The cost is $75 for a three-person team and $100 for a four-person squad. The tournament is for players 18-and-older. The scholarship fund seeks to honor Conway’s spirit, as well as his work within the Deering community. Each year, a deserving Deering senior will be awarded a sizable scholarship to help continue their education at a college or university. FMI, 207-730-6533 or email@example.com.
