SMCC hoops season underway

Southern Maine Community College’s men’s and women’s basketball teams kicked off the 2014-15 season last weekend with the Can-Am tournament in Auburn. The men defeated St. Thomas University (66-59) and the University of New Brunswick (63-59). Atencio Martin had 15 points against St. Thomas, while Josh Tuplin had a team-high 12 points against UNB. The women defeated Cegep Champlain St. Lawrence (66-48) and fell against UNB (61-55). In the victory, Alicia Hoyt had 11 points. Samantha Griffin and Jaimi Poland both had nine points in the loss.

Basketball shooting clinic upcoming

There will be a shooting clinic for girls’ basketball players in grades 3-9 Sunday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at St. Joseph’s College in Standish. The clinic will be headed by St. Joe’s coach Mike McDevitt and his staff and players. The fee is $35 in advance or $45 the day of. FMI, 893-6671 or mikemcdevitt@sjcme.edu.
