Three local lacrosse players named All-Americans

While the Cape Elizabeth and Scarborough boys’ and the Scarborough girls’ lacrosse teams fell short of their ultimate goal, a state championship, those teams got some very pleasant news recently as one player from each was named an All-American. The boys’ team featured Cape Elizabeth senior attack Mike Holden, who had 37 goals, 17 assists and 39 ground balls this spring, in leading the Capers to the Class B Final, and Scarborough senior midfielder Danny Clark, bound for Siena next year, guided the Red Storm to the Western A Final. On the girls’ side, one of the eight All-Americans was Scarborough junior Ellie Morin, who was an honorable mention. Morin had 56 goals, 13 assists, 30 ground balls, won 40 draws and caused 23 turnovers.
“Ellie brings way more to our team than just goals,” said Red Storm coach Marcia Wood. “She’s a big part of our defense with her ability to check the ball away. She’s also a big part of our midfield transition. She constantly hustles to the ball, which is why she has so many ground balls. She has great composure on offense and can weave her way through defenders without losing the ball.”

Field hockey all-star game Saturday
The annual senior field hockey all-star game is Saturday at Colby College in Waterville, with the alumni game at 5:30 p.m. and the senior all-stars playing at 7 p.m. Admission is $5 for adults and $3 for students and seniors, all the proceeds go to our charity of choice, the Family Violence Project.

USM lacrosse hosting two fundraisers
The University of Southern Maine men’s lacrosse team, coming off the first winning season in program history, is hosting a skills clinic/competition for boys ages 6 to 18 and a boys’ high school 3-versus-3 tournament on Saturday at the Gorham campus’ Hodgdon Field. The clinic is from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. The cost is $25 for pre-registration and $30 the day of. The 3v3 tournament goes from 12:30 to 4 p.m. Cost is $60 per team. Scarborough softball camp upcoming
The Big Hits Summer Softball Camp, sponsored by Scarborough Community Services, will be held in June and July at the Scarborough High School fields. Scarborough varsity coach Tom Griffin leads the lineup of coaches involved. Ages 6 through 8 go from June 29 to July 3 from 9 a.m., to 12 p.m. The cost is $100. Ages 8 through 12 attend the same dates from 9 a.m., to 3 p.m. The cost is $185. Ages 12 through 17 go from July 13 through 18 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. The cost is $185. First annual lacrosse refereeing camp scheduled
The first annual Midcoast Lacrosse Refereeing Camp will be held July 6 through 9 at Bowdoin College. Times are 3:30 to 8:30 p.m. the first three days and 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. on July 9. Directed by Mary Parker and Sue Perkins, the camp features classroom instruction, mechanics, game tape analysis, rules clarification, extensive on-field mentoring and more. Odyssey Sport tryouts upcoming
