SMCC teams enjoy strong week

The fall sports teams at Southern Maine Community College have turned it on in recent action. Baseball went 3-1 last week, routing Unity College 22-2 and sweeping a doubleheader from the University of New Hampshire’s club team. Men’s soccer defeated Central Maine CC 2-0 and Hesser College 5-2 to improve to 4-5-1. The women’s team downed Hesser 9-0 and Dean College 6-3 for its first two wins of the season. Junior forward Morgan Crespo was named the USCAA Women’s Soccer Player of the Week, scoring seven goals in the two games. Golf took part in the Maine Intercollegiate Tournament hosted by Thomas College and placed 10th with a score of 727. Mike Walp shot an 81 Friday and a 76 Saturday to lead the Seawolves. Softball lost 12-0 against CMCC and was swept by the UNH club team, 6-5 and 12-11.

USM offering baseball clinic

The University of Southern Maine baseball staff will hold an advanced baseball clinic Sunday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. The clinic is for high school aged players who have aspirations of playing in college. The cost is $75. FMI, 780-5474.

Golfing for a Cure fundraiser upcoming

WGME-13’s Dave Eid is hosting the first “Golfing for a Cure” tournament to benefit brain tumor research and treatment for the Noyes Brain Tumor Foundation, Monday at 8 a.m. at Sable Oaks Golf Course. The cost is $100 per person and includes 18 holes of golf, greens fees, a cart and a barbecue lunch. FMI, 282-6185 or benefittournament.org.

Sailing regatta/fundraiser upcoming

SailMaine is hosting its second annual Leafer’s Last Leg regatta/SailMaine Soiree silent auction fundraiser Saturday, Oct. 17. Dozens of local high school sailors and seasoned sailing veterans will square off on courses outside Portland Harbor. BIW hockey team facing Montreal Canadiens alumni

The Bath Iron Works hockey team, IRONCLAD, will play the Montreal Canadiens alumni 2 p.m. on Oct. 11 at the Cumberland County Civic Center in Portland in a fundraiser for Habitat for Humanity. Confirmed Canadiens players include Guy Lafleur, Larry Robinson and Steve Shutt. Tickets are $15. FMI, 650-5050.
