Local men honored by Maine Sports Legends

Former South Portland High varsity football coach and teacher John Wolfgram, former Red Riots men’s basketball coach Tony Hamlin and former Cape Elizabeth coach Leroy Rand (posthumous) will be inducted into the Maine Sports Legends Hall of Honor Sunday in Waterville. Also inducted Saturday will be Andy Palmer, Lynwood McHatten and Roger Shaw frrom northern Maine, Richard Whitmore and Noel “Spat” Roy from central Maine and Lucy Bogdanovich (a longtime field hockey coach at Deering High) and Ray Ciknell from southern Maine. SMCC fall season continues

The Southern Maine Community College golf team came in second at the recent Yankee Small College Conference Championships in Cumberland, shooting a 341, which left the Seawolves nine strokes behind New Hampshire Technical Institute. Matt Findlay (78) and Mike Walp (79) led the way. Baseball improved to 9-5 with a recent 2-1 win over rival Central Maine CC. SMCC will play in the NECA Baseball Championships Saturday at Hadlock Field. The Seawolves meet Vermont Technical College at 1 p.m. The winner faces NHTI or CMCC in the title game at 3:30 p.m. Softball will take part in the NECA Championships Saturday at Wainwright Fields in South Portland. SMCC plays CMCC at 11 a.m. The winner meets NHTI or the University of New Hampshire. Men’s soccer beat Unity 5-0 and lost 4-3 in overtime to CMCC in recent action. The Seawolves close the regular season at home against Vermont Tech Saturday at 3 p.m. Women’s soccer beat St. Joseph’s College 5-1, lost 2-0 to Unity and settled for a scoreless draw against the University of Maine-Augusta last week. They wrap up the regular year against Vermont Tech Saturday.

Former New England Patriots coming to Portland for flag football game

Former New England Patriots standouts Ronnie Lippett and Roland James will compete with the New England Patriots Alumni Flag Football team and take part in a game against the Cumberland County Sheriff’s P.A.L. and ECMG Saturday, Oct. 17 at 7 p.m. at Deering High’s Memorial Stadium. Portland Recreation hosting NBA/WNBA FIT Challenge

Porland Recreation will host the local competition of the NBA/WNBA FIT Challenge Sunday, Oct. 18 at 2 p.m. at the Riverton Community Center. Sailing regatta/fundraiser upcoming

SailMaine is hosting its second annual Leafer’s Last Leg regatta/SailMaine Soiree silent auction fundraiser Saturday, Oct. 17. Dozens of local high school sailors and seasoned sailing veterans will square off on courses outside Portland Harbor. BIW hockey team facing Montreal Canadiens alumni

The Bath Iron Works hockey team, IRONCLAD, will play the Montreal Canadiens alumni 2 p.m. on Oct. 11 at the Cumberland County Civic Center in Portland in a fundraiser for Habitat for Humanity.
