Several Scarborough and South Portland football players were named to the Southwestern Maine Activities Association team. The first-team offense included South Portland lineman Danny Guiliani and wide receiver Hayden Owen. Scarborough quarterback Jack Hughes, running back Zach Carriero, wide receivers Milani Hicks and Griffin Madden, tight end Jacob Gardner and lineman Mahlon Glidden and South Portland lineman Ismael Baez made the second-team. On defense, South Portland’s Matthew Stearns made the first-team. Scarborough end Anthony Quintiliani, linebacker Aren Dickman and defensive back Milani Hicks and South Portland tackles Ismael Baez and Danny Guiliani, along with end Jaren Muller, were named to the second-team. Hicks was also recently named a semifinalist for the Fitzpatrick Trophy. Scarborough’s Packy Malia was named SMAA Assistant Coach of the Year.
Several local boys’ and girls’ soccer players were named Sunday to the All-State team. Cape Elizabeth’s Griffin Thoreck, Scarborough’s Ian Corey and Sam Ware and Ahmed Suja of South Portland made the boys’ team. Cape Elizabeth’s Montana Braxton and Kathryn Clark and Scarborough’s Ashley Gleason, Katherine Kirk and Sam Sparda were named to the girls’ squad. Scarborough boys’ coach Mark Diaz was named the Western Maine Coach of the Year and is a finalist for Region 1 Coach of the Year honors. Scarborough girls’ coach Mike Farley is also a finalist for Region 1 Coach of the Year.
Portland Elks Lodge 188 will hold a foul shooting contest Saturday, Dec. 20 at the McAuley gym. Registration is 9 a.m. There will categories for girls and boys in age groups 8-9, 10-11 and 12-13. The winners advance to the district shoot-off. FMI, 773-6426.
