SMCC drops hoops doubleheader to rival

Tuesday night, Southern Maine Community College hosted rival Central Maine CC in a basketball doubleheader to wrap up the first semester. The women hung tough throughout, but fell 60-55, dropping to 5-5 overall (5-2 in the conference). Rachel Del Camp had 20 points and 13 rebounds. In the men’s game, CMCC outlasted the Seawolves, 109-105, despite 20 points and nine rebounds from Coleman Findlay. Josh Mackie and Mike Burchill both added 15. SMCC is 6-7 on the year (4-4 in conference). The men are now idle until Jan. 6 when they face Rochester. The women return to action Jan. 8 against Briarcliffe College.

SMCC names November Athletes of the Month

The SMCC athletic department and Liberty Mutual named Michael Burchill and Alisa Sweet its November Athletes of the Month. Burchill, a plumbing and heating major, leads the men’s basketball team with 23 3-pointers. He’s averaging 11.2 points per game. Sweet, a general studies major, has scored 14 points and added 12.3 rebounds per contest for the women’s hoops squad.

SMCC hosting alumni basketball game

Southern Maine Community College is hosting a men’s basketball alumni game Sunday, Jan. 24 from 11 a.m. to 12 p.m., prior to the men’s varsity game against Holyoke C.C. at 1 p.m. FMI, 741-5927.

SP football players named to SMAA team

The Southern Maine Activities Association recently released its list of football all-stars. The first-team offense included South Portland senior running back Ryan Curit. Senior teammate Mike Foley made the first team defense at back. The Cumberland County first team offense featured Curit at running back. Foley made the first team defense at back. Foley was a second team offense selection at wide receiver. Teammate Tanner Kierstead made the second team offense at tackle and the second team defense at tackle. South Portland’s Spencer Bowring was a second team defense choice at end.

Yarmouth seeking assistant lax coach

Yarmouth High School is seeking an assistant varsity girls’ lacrosse coach for the 2010 season. FMI, 846-2329.

Cape, Scarborough runners named to Coaches’ cross country all-star team

Scarborough standout Nate Hathaway was named to the 2009 Maine Track and Cross Country Coaches’ Association boys’ all-star first team. Teammate Nick Morris was an honorable mention. Cape Elizabeth’s Emily Attwood was a first team girls’ selection. Teammate Rachel Nichols was an honorable mention.
