SMCC women win conference title
The Southern Maine Community College women’s basketball team won the Yankee Small College Conference championship last weekend, downing Eastern Maine CC, 64-57, in the semifinals (thanks to 14 points and 13 rebounds from Alisa Sweet and 13 points and 13 boards from Rachel Del Camp) and Central Maine CC, 59-47, in the championship game. Sweet and DelCamp combined for 36 points and 25 rebounds. Amanda Chandler added 15 points. Del Camp was named the tournament’s Most Outstanding Player. Chandler was named the tournament’s Outstanding Offensive Player. SMCC will next compete in the USCAA National Tournament March 2-6 in Uniontown, Pa. The men weren’t as fortunate. After beating Vermont Tech on the road in a quarterfinal game, 90-81 (behind 23 points and 10 rebounds from Coleman Findlay), the Seawolves fell 87-85 to NHTI in the semifinals, despite four players in double figures, led by Josh Mackie with 17. SMCC didn’t qualify for the national tournament and wound up 17-12.
SMCC hoops stars honored
Three SMCC basketball players were recently honored at the Yankee Small College Conference awards banquet in Lewiston. Coleman Findlay of the men’s team was named to the all-conference team. Rachel Del Camp and Alisa Sweet of the women’s squad made the all-conference team as well. Del Camp was chosen as the YSCC Women’s Player of the Year.
SP coaching openings
South Portland High School is seeking a junior varsity girls’ lacrosse coach. Mahoney and Memorial Middle schools need a girls’ lacrosse and a boys’ lacrosse coach and Memorial is also seeking a softball coach for the 2010 spring season. FMI, 767-7705.
Back Bay lax registration

Running program set to begin
The Nor’Easter Run training/racing program for male and female runners of any level of ability, led by Maine Running of Hall of Fame coach Ziggy Gillespie, begins March 3. There will be Wednesday workouts at 6 p.m. and several races, including the Beach to Beacon. FMI, happy2smiles2001@yahoo.com.
Scarborough hosting softball clinic
The Southern New Hampshire University softball coaching staff and players will be at Wentworth School Gym in Scarborough Sunday from 12 to 2:30 p.m., to conduct a free pitching clinic for all Scarborough girls ages 8 to 12. There is a $15 fee for non-residents. FMI, 885-0074 or griff5@maine.rr.com.
Open basketball offered

Maine Lacrosse training new officials
The Maine Lacrosse Officials Association (MLOA) needs more officials to support boys’ lacrosse at Maine high schools, middle school and youth events and is hosting a certification course beginning Feb. 28 at the North Yarmouth Academy (NYA) Middle School in Yarmouth. Cape Elizabeth fire department hockey fundraiser upcoming
The third annual Cape Elizabeth Fire Department versus the Cape Elizabeth varsity hockey team will be held Saturday, March 20 at 8:30 p.m., at the Portland Ice Arena. Tickets are $5 for adults and $3 for students. All proceeds benefit the Engine 2 Company.
