SMCC hoops teams earn top 10 rankings

The Southern Maine Community College men’s basketball team is up to third in the United States Collegiate Athletic Association’s Division II poll at 12-2 (8-0 in the Yankee Small College Conference). The Seawolves return to action Jan. 8 at home versus Northern Essex. The women are ranked 10th at 8-6 (6-2 in conference). SMCC hosts Briarcliffe, New York Jan. 5.

Christmas basketball tournament upcoming

The annual Red Claws Christmas Tournament will be held Friday and Saturday at the Portland Exposition Building and Portland High School. On Opening Day at the Expo, in games involving local teams, the Scarborough and Falmouth girls play at 12 p.m., Portland’s girls meet Londonderry, N.H., at 1:30 p.m., Portland’s boys play Yarmouth at 3 p.m., Portland meets New Dorp, N.Y., in a boys’ game at 7:30 p.m. and Falmouth plays MSIT, N.Y., in a boys’ game at 8:45 p.m. On Saturday at the Expo, Greely’s girls play Gorham at 9:30 a.m., Greely’s boys meet Westbrook at 11 a.m., McAuley and Fryeburg play in a girls’ game at 12:30 p.m., Portland’s girls face Lake Region at 2 p.m., Deering’s boys play Gorham at 6:30 p.m. and Greely’s girls face off against Thornton Academy at 9:15 p.m. At Portland High School, Yarmouth’s boys play MSIT, N.Y., at 3 p.m., Scarborough’s girls face Fryeburg at 4:30 p.m., Cape Elizabeth’s boys meet MSIT, N.Y., at 6 p.m. and Falmouth’s boys play New Dorp, N.Y., at 7:30 p.m.

Ryan Flaherty to appear in Portland

Former Deering High standout and current Baltimore Oriole Ryan Flaherty will appear at the Italian Heritage Center in Portland Monday. The night, presented by Legends of Maine Baseball, will run from 5 to 9 p.m. The Master of Ceremonies will be Bill Green of WCSH6. Tickets are $20 each and will include a variety of appetizers. The event is a co-hosted by Greely Baseball and Deering’s American Legion baseball club. There will be some silent and live auction items to bid on throughout the course of the evening.
