South Portland Little League holding Opening Day festivities

The South Portland National Little League will hold its 2010 Opening Day ceremonies Saturday, May 1 at 9 a.m., at the Pine Street Little League complex. John “Slim” Lee, unit director of the South Portland Boys and Girls Club since 1974, will be honored for his tireless commitment to the youth of the city and will throw out the ceremonial first pitch.

Portland rugby team wins again

The Portland boys’ U-19 rugby team, the “Power Pigs,” improved to 2-0 Saturday with a 34-7 win over Kimball Union Academy in New Hampshire. Flanker Jack McDonald from Cape Elizabeth had two quick tries, each converted by flyhalf Francisco Marques of Greely. Marques and McDonald added single tries before the half to make it 24-0. In the second stanza, center Chase Rochon of Greely scored and lock Thorn Chhloeum of Scarborough closed out with a try on the game’s final play to account for the final score. Portland returns to action Saturday at 2:30 when it hosts Upper Valley, N.H., at Fox Street Field. For more on the team, visit powerpigrugby.org.

Baseball/softball program offered for children with disabilities

Challenger Division baseball/softball, for children with physical and/or mental disabilities or developmental delays, will meet Sundays from 2 to 3 p.m. The league is open for children ages 5 to 18 in the Greater Portland area. Local lacrosse coaches hosting clinic

Yarmout girls’ varsity lacrosse coach Dorothy Holt and NYA coach Julia Sterling are hosting a free girls’ youth coaches/parents clinic on Monday from 6:30 to 8 p.m. at the NYA gymnasium. The clinic is designed to help youth and middle school coaches and parents understand how to teach the basics of lacrosse, as well as learn new drills and techniques.
