SMCC spring season continues

The spring sports season at Southern Maine Community College is winding down. Baseball is 19-18 overall and will host the Yankee Small College Conference championships Saturday at Wainwright Field in South Portland. SMCC will be the No. 2 seed and will play No. 4 New Hampshire Technical Institute in the semifinals. Softball (15-8) will be the top seed for the tournament, which will take place at SMCC on Saturday. The Seawolves will face either NHTI or Central Maine CC. SMCC and CMCC will host the USCAA national baseball tournament May 9-14 at the Ball Park in Old Orchard Beach. In other athletics news, the Seawolves Athletic Club will host a Foundation and Athletic Golf Tournament June 22 at Prouts Neck CC in Scarborough. Twilight Baseball League tryouts upcoming

The 2010 Twilight Baseball League, which includes teams in Auburn, Biddeford and Portland, will hold tryouts May 30 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Frozen Ropes Training Center in Portland. Players who turn 19 by Aug. 1 or who spent the 2009-10 academic year in college or prep school are eligible. There is a $10 tryout fee. FMI, 878-2600 or leaguelineup.com/twilightbaseballleague.

Local teams in boys’ lacrosse poll

Cape Elizabeth, Scarborough and South Portland are all included in the latest boys’ lacrosse coaches’ poll. The Capers were ranked third behind Falmouth and two-time defending Class B champion Yarmouth. Portland was ranked fourth, then the Red Riots were in the fifth spot. After Brunswick in sixth, the Red Storm were ranked seventh.
