SMCC fall sports roll on
The fall sports season at Southern Maine Community College continued last week. Baseball went 2-2 with wins over Central Maine Community College (5-4) and Bridgton (6-2) and losses to New Hampshire Technical Institute (8-7 and 18-3). Andrew Watt earned Yankee Small College Conference Player of the Week honors for his victory against CMCC. Softball went 5-1 last week, beating Fisher College (9-2 and 8-2), NHTI (2-1 and 3-2) and St. Anselm (10-7). The lone loss was to St. Anselm (5-3). The Seawolves are currently 5-3 overall, 2-0 in league play. Men’s soccer is 5-3 overall and remains unbeaten in YSCC play at 3-0. South Portland’s Matt Richio was recently named Goalie of the Week by the USCAA. He had 15 saves in a recent shutout win over NHTI. Women’s soccer is battling injuries and low numbers and has a 1-6 mark (1-4 in conference). Golf was first at the final regular season match last weekend. South Portland’s Matt Findlay was the first medalist, shooting a 77. Coleman Findlay was second with an 80. Golf is 4-1 overall and will head to the YSCC championship match Sunday in Vassalboro.
South Portland coaching vacancies
South Portland High School is seeking a first team girls’ basketball coach and a varsity baseball coach. Memorial Middle School has an opening for a 7th grade boys’ basketball coach. Mahoney Middle School is seeking a 7th grade girls’ basketball coach. Application deadline is Sept. 30. FMI, 767-7705.

The SMAA and WMC are jointly seeking boys’ and girls’ lacrosse assignors. Interested candidates should send a cover letter and resume by Friday, Oct. 15 to Susan_Robbins@yarmouth.k12.me.us.
Seacoast United tryouts upcoming
Seacoast United Maine’s Junior Academy program is holding tryouts Thursday Oct. 7 at Portland’s Armory on Stevens Avenue. Boys go from 4 to 5:30 p.m., girls from 5:30 to 7 p.m. There will also be tryouts at the SUSC Maine Indoor Arena in Topsham Monday, Sept. 27 and Tuesday, Oct. 5, from 5 to 6:30 p.m. (for both boys and girls). Frozen Ropes tryouts upcoming
The Frozen Ropes Training Center will conduct tryouts Oct. 23 at the Portland Sports Center on Warren Avenue, beginning at 12 p.m. for their U-13 and U-14 travel baseball teams. FMI, 878-2600 or frozenropes.com/portland.
