More all-stars named
In addition to the all-stars mentioned in last week’s edition, local field hockey and soccer players were recently honored. Cape Elizabeth’s Kelsey Maguire, Scarborough’s Kristen Felt and Stephanie Felt and South Portland’s Rebecca Roberts were named to the field hockey all-state team. Kristen Felt and teammate Rachel Millett qualified for the SMAA All-Academic team. The boys’ soccer all-state team featured Scarborough’s Andrew Jones and Peter Rizzi. The girls’ squad included Cape Elizabeth’s Karyn Barrett and Scarborough’s Nicollette Caron and Cortney Hughes. Scarborough’s Mike Farley was chosen the girls’ Western Maine Coach of the Year and the New England Region 1 girls’ large school Coach of the Year.
SMCC baseball clinic upcoming
The Southern Maine Community College baseball players and coaches will hold a clinic, featuring hitting, fielding, pitching and running, for players ages 9 through 12 from Dec. 27 through 31 from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. at the HUB Athletic Center. SP Rec hosting contest
The South Portland Recreation Department is hosting a MRPA/Red Claws Hot Shot and Free Throw contest at the South Portland Community Center, Thursday, Dec. 23. The boys’ free throw contest is at 10 a.m. The boys’ hot shot contest starts at 11 a.m. The girls’ free throw contest begins at 12 p.m. The girls’ hot shot contest starts at 1 p.m. FMI, 767-7650.
SMCC hoops teams up and down
The Southern Maine Community College men’s basketball team lost recent decisions to conference rivals New Hampshire Technical Institute (90-87) and Vermont Tech (103-67) to fall to 6-5 on the season. In the close setback, Josh Mackie was one of five players in double figures with 19 points. He added 15 against Vermont Tech. The women, meanwhile, is 6-5. The Seawolves lost, 58-47, to NHTI (Ariel LeDuc had 13 points, Esther Palmieri 12 and Christina Ricci (11), downed Vermont Tech, 57-49 (behind Ricci’s 22 points), then fell, 72-60, to visiting St. Joseph’s College of New York (despite 12 points from Chelsea Sloat).
GPCS hosting alumni basketball game
