SP lineman wins inaugural award
South Portland senior Matt Welch was named the inaugural winner of the Frank Gaziano award for offensive linemen Sunday in Augusta. He also received a $2,500 scholarship. Welch was the team’s captain and is also the indoor track team’s captain. He plays lacrosse in the spring. He won the Bill Murphy Lineman Award and was named the team’s MVP by the Quarterback Club. Welch, 18, is also an SMAA Academic All-Star and high honor student. He will attend Bates College.
Busy weekend for SMCC hoops teams
Southern Maine Community College’s men’s and women’s basketball teams hosted Unity College and Vermont Tech this weekend. Saturday, the women downed Unity, 83-27, behind 19 points and 11 rebounds from Christina Ricci, 16 points and seven rebounds from Alisa Sweet and 13 points apiece from Esther Palmieri and Jessica Truman (who also had five assists and five steals). The men defeated Unity, 112-51, as Josh Mackie had 22 points, Paul Holland 18, Coleman Findlay 14 and Matt Findlay and Randall Laing 12 apiece. Sunday, the women beat Vermont Tech, 72-62, thanks to 31 points from Ricci, 17 from Palmieri and 16 from Sweet, to improve to 9-11 (5-2 in the Yankee Small College Conference). The men lost to Vermont Tech, 88-83, despite 24 points from Coleman Findlay. Tuesday, SMCC bounced back with a 112-82 home win over Lakes Region CC to improve to 12-10 (6-3 in-conference). Coleman Findlay went off for 28, Mackie added 23 and Holland finished with 16. . The Seawolves were back in action Thursday at home versus the University of Maine-Augusta. SMCC will host Navy Prep Saturday. The women’s game starts at 5 p.m., the men play at 6:45 p.m.
SPNLL holding registration
The South Portland National Little League is holding its registration Feb. 7 (6 to 8 p.m.) and 12 (11 a.m. to 1 p.m.) at the Community Center. Umpire certification classes upcoming

Casco Bay Sports winter offerings
Casco Bay Sports has several leagues primed to start soon. A Sunday night co-ed indoor soccer league begins Jan. 30 at YourSpace in Gorham. Wednesday night co-ed softball starts Feb. 2 in Gorham. Sunday co-ed basketball begins Feb. 13 at the East End Community Center in Portland. There will also be Monday, Tuesday and Thursday night dodgeball leagues beginning in early February, a Wednesday bowling league and a new Monday co-ed volleyball league beginning in late February.
