Former Scarborough runner earns UMO academic award

Scarborough’s Chris Harmon recently received a gold medallion award at the University of Maine for the second time in recognition for his achievements as a scholar-athlete (track, cross country). Harmon, a political science major, was also named to “Team Maine” for having the highest GPA on his team.

SMCC men earn victories

The Southern Maine Community College men’s basketball team defeated host New Hampshire Technical Institute (80-65), Eastern Maine CC (77-71) and rival Central Maine CC (79-61) in recent action to improve to 16-11 overall and 9-3 in the Yankee Small College Conference. Coleman Findlay had 14 points versus NHTI, while Paul Holland and Josh Mackie both had 12, Matt Findlay 11 and Daniel Foster 10. Against EMCC, Mackie had 17 points, Coleman Findlay 15 and Foster 14. Coleman Findlay had 20 points versus CMCC, Mackie added 12 and Anderson Bynum had 10. The women lost at NHTI (64-59) and EMCC (62-56), then bounced back to down CMCC (72-68) to improve to 11-14 on the year (9-4 in conference). Alisa Sweet had 23 points and 23 rebounds and Christina Ricci went off for 32 points in the victory. SMCC closes the regular season at home versus Berkeley College Saturday.

SMCC holding alumni basketball games

Southern Maine Community College will hold alumni games Saturday. The women play at 2 p.m. The men at 3 p.m. The current women’s team plays Berkeley College at 5 p.m. and the men face Berkeley at 7 p.m. At 9 p.m., there will be a postgame reception at Rivalries Sports Bar in Portland. SPNLL holding registration

Scarborough softball clinic

The Southern New Hampshire University softball coaching staff and players will be at the Wentworth Gym at Scarborough High Feb. 27 from 12 to 2:30 p.m. for a free softball clinic for all Scarborough girls ages 6 to 13.
