SP hockey player a Travis Roy semifinalist

South Portland senior defenseman Tommy Ellis is a semifinalist for the Travis Roy Award, given to the top senior in Class A. Ellis is a three-year captain, a member of National Honor Society and plans to study geology in college, where he hopes to play football. Ellis was the football quarterback and is a defenseman on the boys’ lacrosse team. The Travis Roy Award is given in honor of the former Boston University player who was paralyzed in his first college shift. The award will be bestowed later this month.

SP coaching vacancies

South Portland High School is seeking a junior varsity girls’ soccer, a JV baseball and a JV softball coach. Mahoney Middle School needs an assistant indoor track coach. FMI, 767-7705.

Beach to Beacon training group registration open

Registration for the Maine Running Company’s Beach to Beacon training group and the Maine Running Academy is open through March 10. Orientation will be held for beginners Tuesday, March 8 at 6 p.m. and for anyone who completes a 5K Thursday, March 10 at 6 p.m., at the Maine Running Company on Forest Avenue in Portland. Running program upcoming

The Nor’Easter run training and racing program, under the direction of Maine Running Hall of Famer and current Waynflete School track coach Brian “Ziggy” Gillespie begins in March and runs through Aug. 31.
