WMC sweeps soccer all-star games

The Western Maine Conference senior men’s and women’s soccer teams got the better of their Southern Maine Activities Association counterparts last week at Westbrook High in the 21st annual all-star soccer tournament as each won by a 2-1 score. In the men’s game, Cape Elizabeth’s Ben Raymond served as a coach for the WMC. Local players participating included Cape Elizabeth’s Cam Brown, Jack Queeney and Timmy Takach for the WMC and Scarborough’s Matthew Graef, Kevin Philbrook and Peter Rizzi and South Portland’s Brian Campbell and Matt Russell for the SMAA.

In the women’s game, Scarborough’s Mike Farley was one of the SMAA coaches. Local players taking part included Cape Elizabeth’s Karyn Barrett and Lexie Weatherbie for the WMC and Scarborough’s Cortney Hughes for the SMAA. Both WMC teams now hold a 10-4 advantage over the SMAA with seven ties.

Cape Elizabeth first-day practice schedule

The first day of the fall sports preseason at Cape Elizabeth is Monday. Football meets from 7 to 10 a.m. and 4 to 6 p.m. Boys’ soccer goes from 7:30 to 9:30 a.m., 12 to 2 p.m. and 6 to 8:30 p.m. Girls’ soccer meets from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m., 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8:30 p.m. Field hockey goes from 7 to 10 a.m. and 4 to 6 p.m. Boys’ cross country meets at the front of the school from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. Girls’ cross country goes from 7 to 9 a.m. Golf has tryouts starting Tuesday at 2 p.m. at Purpooduck. Volleyball meets from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the gym.

Locals earn wins at Senior Games

The recent Maine Senior Games in Scarborough produced some local winners. Cape Elizabeth’s John Maley took the javelin (74 feet, 10 inches) and discus (103-5), Justin Rinfret of Scarborough was tops in the shot put (34-7) and South Portland’s Mary Ann Molloy was first in the 100 (18.42 seconds).

Summerfest race upcoming

The Scarborough Summerfest 5K and 1-mile races will be held Friday, Aug. 19 at the Scarborough High athletic complex. The 1-mile race for 13 and under will start at 6 p.m. The 5K begins at 6:30 p.m. Registration is $10 for the 1-mile race and $15 for the 5K. FMI, rkelly01@maine.rr.com.
