SMCC fall teams underway

Southern Maine Community College’s fall sports season has begun. The early highlight came from Cape Elizabeth’s Alex McFarlane, who was named the YSCC and USCAA Player of the Week after medaling at his first career golf tournament, shooting a 1-over 71. That led the Seawolves to a victory. Saturday, SMCC finished first in a match in Litchfield as Tommy Stirling shot a 73. Stirling was then named the YSCC Golf Player of the Week.

Men’s soccer fell to Albany College of Pharmacy and Bridgton Academy in its first two contests, but bounced back with a pair of explosive outings, blanking the University of Maine-Augusta, 12-0, and pounding Northern Maine CC, 7-1. Blais Whitney was named the YSCC Men’s Soccer Player of the Week after scoring five goals and assisting on another. The women’s first home game is Saturday against New Hampshire Institute of Technology. The women play at noon, the men meet NHTI at 2 p.m. SMCC is coming off a 3-1 loss to U. Maine-Augusta, despite Bethany Gullbrand’s goal.

Baseball has won its first three games, 2-1 over Bridgton Academy, and 6-4 and 6-5 over the University of New Hampshire’s club team. Softball beat the University of Maine’s club team, 21-4 and 14-2 in a pair of exhibitions.
