Holiday tourneys upcoming

Local basketball and hockey teams will take part in holiday tournaments next week. The Portland Expo will host boys’ and girls’ hoops action. On Tuesday, South Portland’s boys play Lake Region at 5 p.m. Wednesday, Cape Elizabeth meets Scarborough at 1 p.m. and the winner faces Falmouth at 7 p.m. Play continues Dec. 29 and 30 with pairings to be announced.

In girls’ action at the Expo, Cape Elizabeth meets Portland at 11 a.m. Monday. Wednesday, the Capers will face an opponent to be announced at 11:30 a.m. South Portland isn’t participating in a holiday tournament.

At the Maine High School Hockey Invitational, Cape Elizabeth plays Belmont, Mass., Monday at 12 p.m. at the Biddeford Ice Arena. Scarborough follows at 2 p.m. with a game versus Tewksbury, Mass. Wednesday in Biddeford, Cape Elizabeth plays Berlin, N.H. at 10 a.m. The same day at MHG Arena in Saco, Scarborough plays Lowell, Mass., at 2 p.m.

Local volleyball stars named all-conference

The Southern Maine All-Conference team was released and included Cape Elizabeth middle hitter Olivia Cooper and Scarborough outside hitter Brittany Bona and setter Emily Robbins.

Portland YMCA offering swim assessment

Maine Elite Lacrosse offerings

Maine Elite Lacrosse is offering a range of activities at the new Riverside Athletic Center in Portland. On Sundays, boys’ K-8 Skills and Drills is at 3 p.m., K-6 game time at 4 p.m. and high school games at 5 and 6 p.m. Monday at 5 p.m., girls play a full field 7v7 game. Tuesdays, boys’ high school pickup is at 3 p.m., girls’ K-8 Skills and Drills at 5, Boys’ grades 7-8 games at 6 p.m. and boys’ high school full field games at 7 p.m. Wednesday, boys’ high school pickup is at 3 p.m., women’s collegiate pickup at 8 p.m. Thursdays, boys’ high school pickup is at 3 p.m. and men’s collegiate pickup is at 8 p.m.

Hot Shot hoops contest upcoming

The Maine Recreation and Park Association and the Maine Red Claws have teamed up to sponsor the “Hot Shot Contest” this winter. The skills contest is built around a 60-second drill that requires participants to draw on all aspects of the game. Open events will be held Friday in South Portland, Tuesday in Brunswick and Wednesday in Freeport, Old Orchard Beach and Wiscasset. FMI, 767-7650, sbest@southportland.org or merpa.org.

MPL hosting Winter Classic

Maine Premier Lacrosse is hosting its Indoor Winter Classic Tuesday and Wednesday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Portland Sports Complex, 333 Warren Ave. Several former high school stars will be part of the coaching staff, along with three Native American players. Proceeds from a raffle will benefit NikeN7. Teams will be divided into Pool A and Pool B and will play 10 versus 10 on a full field. Teams are guaranteed four games and all games will be videotaped.
