SMCC heading for conference tournament
After an up and down regular season, the Southern Maine Community College men’s and women’s basketball teams competed in the Yankee Small College Conference postseason tournament in New Hampshire. The women, after a great start to the year, wound up 15-11 (10-6 in conference) after a 70-30 win over Hampshire College in the regular season finale Saturday. Marissa Welch had 16 points and 11 rebounds. The fifth-ranked Seawolves battled rival No. 4 Central Maine CC in the quarterfinals Thursday. The men’s team went 12-17 (4-12 in the conference) and closed with an 89-20 triumph over Hampshire College (Jake Loveridge had a team-high 16 points). SMCC (ranked eighth) meets the top-seed (Eastern Maine CC) in the quarterfinals Friday.
Portland Porpoises compete in Massachusetts
Thirty-six Portland Porpoises traveled to Massachusetts to participate in the North Shore Swim Club Blizzard Classic meet Jan. 27-29. There were many fantastic swims, many best times, state meet qualifiers, as well as many new USA NAG time achievers. Next is the Maine state championship meet at the University of Maine at Orono, March 16-18.
