SOUTH PORTLAND — A 39-year-old woman was killed May 30 when she was struck by a southbound Downeaster train about a mile south of the Portland Transportation Center.
The incident came a day after a man was hit by another Downeaster train in Scarborough.
On Saturday, Nyla J. Howard of South Portland died when she was hit by Train 698 at 6:55 p.m., according to an email from Amtrak spokeswoman Kimberly Woods. Woods said Howard was trespassing on the tracks.
None of the 68 passengers on the train were injured, according to Woods. The crew asked to be relieved, and another crew was brought in to replace them.
The Amtrak Police Department is investigating the incident.
A day earlier, on May 29 around 7 p.m., Marc Collins, 28, of West Gardiner, was struck on the left arm by a southbound Downeaster train on the section of tracks between Winnocks Neck and Pine Point roads in Scarborough.
Scarborough police reported Collins trespassed onto the tracks with his brother and was fishing in the marsh. They said he refused medical treatment. The train was carrying 32 passengers.
