SOUTH PORTLAND — A city woman was in Cumberland County Jail in Portland after her arrest Wednesday on charges she stole cash and jewelry from elderly victims.

Margaret Wilkes, 53, was being held on $500 bail. She is charged with three counts of Class B burglary and three counts of Class E theft, said South Portland Police Sgt. Steve Webster, who did not release her address.

Webster said Wilkes is accused of entering local homes while posing as a representative of “The Agency,” asking questions about medical inspections and sometimes conducting fake “inspections.”

Webster said Wilkes is not working for any agency, and is believed to have used the same tactics in other towns. He said Wilkes was arrested on Main Street after a joint investigation with the Portland Police Department.

He said he expects more charges to be filed as the investigation continues.
