SOUTH PORTLAND — By less than 1,000 votes, voters approved ordinance amendments that will ban unhosted short-term rentals in residential areas.

A question of whether to join the Greater Sebago Educational Alliance Regional Service Center also passed by a 9,852-1,713 vote.

According to unofficial results, 6,375 were for the rental regulations and 5,378 were against. 1,550 ballots were left blank.

Unhosted stays will be banned in strictly residential neighborhoods. Hosted stays –renting out a room in a home where the owners are present – will remain legal in residential areas.

Unhosted guests are still be allowed in mixed-use and commercial neighborhoods under the ordinance.
