SOUTH PORTLAND — A custodian who apparently injured himself with a folding knife in the School Department administrative office has been barred from school grounds.

Police were called to 120 Wescott Road, shortly after 10:30 a.m. on March 24 for a medical emergency.

Police Lt. Frank Clark said Andrzej Szpara, 53, of North Sebago, had what appeared to be a self-inflicted knife wound to the abdomen. He was transported to the hospital and summonsed for carrying a concealed weapon.

No threats were made during the incident, Clark said.

Superintendent of Schools Suzanne Godin said the department is conducting a personnel investigation into the matter. It is against school policy to bring weapons onto school grounds, she said.

Although the office is connected to Memorial Middle School, Clark said no children were present or endangered during the incident.

Szpara is scheduled to appear in court May 19.
