Inferno explained

9/16 The South Portland Fire Department and Maine Fire Marshall concluded the cause of a fire that burned a garage and a portion of the connected house at 81 Hamilton St. was improper disposal of painting materials. According to Fire Chief Kevin Guimond, a resident disposed of oil-based paint-soaked rags in a trash container, then piled paper and other trash on top. The oil-soaked rags ignited from their own heat and started the fire. Though the fire department arrived within five minutes, the fire had already spread to a minivan’s gas tank, causing it to explode and exacerbate the blaze. The family and their dog escaped the fire unharmed. Damage was estimated at $50,000.
