SOUTH PORTLAND — Volunteers on Saturday, April 30, will create a habitat for Monarch butterflies at Pope Preserve in Knightville.

The event at the small park on Mill Cove, behind the Cottage Road Hannaford supermarket, will run from 9-11 a.m.

For more than a year, Knightville resident Dan Hogan and others have reclaimed the small area, which was overrun by Japanese knotweed, to turn it into a park.

On Saturday remaining knotweed will be removed and replaced by milkweed seedlings, which help promote the survival of Monarch caterpillars. Volunteers are encouraged to bring gardening tools.
