SOUTH PORTLAND — Three young girls found a loaded handgun early Sunday morning while they were playing outside near the Redbank Community Center.

Police said they received a call from one of the girl’s grandmothers reporting that a 9-year-old and her two friends, ages 8 and 10, had found the loaded gun.

The girls at first thought the loaded Taurus five-shot revolver was a toy when they picked it up, crime analyst Janet Vangeli said.

“They brought it to an adult, which was a really awesome thing,” she said.

Police determined that the gun had been fired recently, because shell casings were found nearby.
