SOUTH PORTLAND — Construction and renovation at South Portland High School will begin Monday, May 7, with a 5 p.m. ground-breaking ceremony in front of Beal Gymnasium.

Mayor Patti Smith, School Board Chairman Tappan Fitzgerald and SPHS student Gaby Ferrel will speak before the shovels hit the ground.

In November 2010, South Portland residents approved a $41.5 million bond to renovate and expand the high school. The plans include a new “Learning Commons,” cafeteria, and lecture hall. PC Construction of Portland will lead the project, which is expected to be complete by the end of 2014.
