SOUTH PORTLAND — Two 15-year-old girls were issued summonses Monday on cruelty to animals charges after allegedly putting a cat in a microwave oven last week.

Police Lt. Frank Clark said the alleged incident, believed to have occurred last Thursday, was brought to police attention after a video was posted on Twitter.

Clark said the cat does not appear to have been harmed, but has been turned over to animal control Officer Corey Hamilton for a veterinary evaluation.

The case has been referred to the Cumberland County district attorney’s office for review and consideration of other charges. The girls, both students at South Portland High School, were not identified because they are juveniles.
