PORTLAND — Motorists in Portland, South Portland and Freeport can expect detours at two exits on Interstate 295.

The Department of Transportation has closed the Exit 4 southbound on-ramp from the Veterans Memorial Bridge in South Portland through Tuesday, Sept. 15, while construction crews make guardrail improvements and add another southbound travel lane between Exits 3 and 4.

Motorists accustomed to accessing the southbound interstate lanes at Exit 4 from the bridge should instead take the Fore River Parkway in Portland to Exit 5, where a portion of the median has been removed to allow traffic in both directions to access the southbound interstate.

Northbound and southbound travel lanes on the bridge remain open to maintain access to Route 1 in South Portland.

The DOT said motorists should allow extra travel time or find alternative routes throughout the closure.

In Freeport, the southbound on- and off-ramps at Exit 22 are being closed while T-Buck Construction of Auburn replaces a failed pipe beneath the roadway.

According to the DOT, the on-ramp will be closed through 6 a.m. Friday, Aug. 7. Next week, the Exit 22 off-ramp will be closed for the same repairs from Monday, Aug. 10, at 9 a.m. through 6 a.m. Friday, Aug. 14.

Drivers are advised to use Exit 20, two miles further south.
