SOUTH PORTLAND — The Fire Department and the regional hazardous materials team responded early Wednesday morning to Rigby Yard, after the odor of chlorine was reported.

A “faint odor” was detected near a rail car that had been carrying chlorine, according to a press release from the department. A valve with a small leak was discovered on the tank car, Lt. Robb Couture said. The air around the rail car was monitored and assessed before the valve was secured.

“Air monitoring devices showed very low levels of chlorine in the immediate vicinity of the rail car, with zero readings 50 feet from the car,” Couture said.
