SOUTH PORTLAND — A longtime firefighter who served the city for more than two decades died early Thursday, Aug. 2, in a two-car crash on Route 202 in Hollis.

Lt. Harry Weymouth, 46, of Buxton, was treated at the scene, but died later at the hospital from his injuries, according to Steve McCausland, public information officer for the Maine Department of Public Safety.

Maine State Police troopers, who are investigating the accident, believe Weymouth fell asleep at the wheel just before 1 a.m., McCausland said.

Weymouth was a 21-year veteran of the South Portland Fire Department and a volunteer with the Buxton Fire Department. He was also was a registered nurse at Southern Maine Health Care’s campus in Sanford, McCausland said.

McCausland said the driver and one passenger in the other vehicle were also transported to the hospital. Both were being treated for non-life threatening injuries.

McCausland said police believe Weymouth was driving home, but not directly from his fire department position, when he crossed the center line and struck the vehicle driven by Zahra Guedi, 45, of Portland.

He said South Portland city officials were notified of the crash shortly after it took place. Besides the state police, firefighters from Hollis and Buxton also responded to the scene.
