SOUTH PORTLAND — City residents Michael Conathan and David Critchfield and Portland resident Russell Pierce Jr. were selected by City Councilors Wednesday to serve on the committee to draft an ordinance banning tar sands from the city.

Conathan served on the staff of former U.S. Sen. Olympia Snowe, R-Maine. Critchfield, a member of the city Conservation Commission, is also a co-founder of Emsource, which acquires corporate environmental risks and manages remediation. Pierce practices litigation with the Portland law firm Norman Hanson and Detroy. Councilors chose from 12 applicants.

The committee is expected to first meet Feb. 6 and may meet every two weeks in order to draft an ordinance.
