SOUTH PORTLAND — People from across New England will meet in Bug Light Park on Saturday, May 18 for the 10th annual kite festival.

Home to the 1855 Portland Breakwater Lighthouse, visitors can also enjoy a barbecue on the harbor and learn about local history at the South Portland Historical Society, located inside the park. The event from 11 a.m.-4 p.m. is free and open to the public; visitors may bring their own kites or buy one at the museum. The rain date is May 19.

Members of the Nor’Easters Kite Club and Kites Over New England are offering workshops and bol racing, where people race using a parachute-like kite that causes resistance and makes running difficult.

Candy drops from kites will also occur during the day at unannounced times. Free water taxi rides between Portland and Bug Light Park will be offered by Portland Harbor Water Tours.
