The short and sweet spring sports season continues to produce memorable moments for local teams and athletes.

Here’s a glimpse of how things stand as we hit the middle of May:

Baseball: Red Storm bounce back

Scarborough’s baseball team was humbled 22-4 (in five innings) by visiting powerhouse Deering Saturday, but proved it was still a team to contend with by answering with a 1-0 win at Portland and a 15-3 home romp over Massabesic. Against the Bulldogs, senior ace Chris Bernard threw a four-hitter and struck out 10 in a complete game effort. Junior Blake Brubach drove in the winning run in the top of the seventh. Against the Mustangs, Bernard and junior Brendan Sullivan each had three hits, while senior Ian Ramsdell drove in three runs. Junior Andrew Myers got the win.

The Red Storm (now 5-2 and fourth in the latest Western Class A Heal Points standings) played at Bonny Eagle Thursday, host Noble Saturday and go to Windham Tuesday.

South Portland is 3-2 after beating visiting Sanford 4-1 last Friday and falling 11-2 at Westbrook Tuesday. In the win, senior Chris Gorham earned the win, while sophomore Zach Horton and freshman Brendan Horton had clutch hits.

The Red Riots (seventh in Western A) were at Massabesic Wednesday, host Biddeford Friday and Cheverus Saturday, visit Deering Monday and welcome Kennebunk Tuesday.

In Western B, Cape Elizabeth earned a huge win at Greely Monday.

Softball: Scarborough still unbeaten

On the girls’ side of the diamond, while Cape Elizabeth was falling from the unbeaten ranks, powerhouse Scarborough was having no such trouble.
The Red Storm improved to 8-0 on the year with recent victories over Westbrook (12-0, in five innings), Windham (2-1) and Noble (14-0, in five innings). Against the Blue Blazes, junior Jenn Colpitts homered twice. In the narrow win at the Eagles, junior Melissa Dellatorre threw a three-hitter and seniors Catie Funk and Abbey Pelletier had clutch RBI. Freshman Mo Hannan threw a five inning perfect game with 12 strikeouts against the Knights.

Scarborough (second in the Western A Heals) visited Marshwood Wednesday, hosts Gorham Friday and takes a trip to Massabesic Monday.

South Portland has quietly strung together five successive wins. The most recent were 4-0 at home over Sanford, 1-0 at Kennebunk and 7-1 at home over Deering. Senior Lauren Tuttle threw a one-hitter with 12 strikeouts to beat the Redskins. Against Kennebunk, sophomore Alexis Bogdanovich had her turn on the mound and she sparkled with a two-hitter. Against Deering, sophomore Danielle DiBiase had a three-run home run to help the Red Riots improve to 6-1.

South Portland (fourth in the Heals) was at Westbrook Wednesday, plays host to Windham Friday and goes to Noble Monday.

In Western B, Cape Elizabeth’s unbeaten and unscored-upon streaks came to an end Friday against visiting Wells in a 3-1 setback. Monday, the Capers bounced back with a 2-1 victory at Greely. Senior Colleen Martin hit a two-run home run and classmate Trish Thibodeau had a perfect game into the seventh inning before settling for a one-hitter with 12 strikeouts.

Cape Elizabeth (6-1 and sixth in the Western B Heals) was at Yarmouth Wednesday, goes to York Monday and hosts St. Dom’s Wednesday.

Boys’ lacrosse: Two big wins for SP

The South Portland boys’ lacrosse team dropped two of its first three games this season, but made some nice strides in recent days with a dramatic 13-12 overtime win at Gorham and a 9-4 home triumph over Deering. In the overtime win, sophomore Harrison Keithly’s fifth goal was the difference. Against Deering, Keithly was hot again scoring three times and adding two assists as the Red Riots improved to 3-2.

The Red Storm were reeling after suffering their first loss, 12-1 at Portland, last Friday. Scarborough didn’t score until the fourth quarter and was dominated in every facet of the game. Tuesday, however, the Red Storm had a much better showing at defending Class B state champion Yarmouth, leading the Clippers for most of the first half before Yarmouth’s explosive offense came to life in the second half en route to a 13-6 decision. Senior Jake Barrett had three goals in defeat.

“I feel much better about my team right now,” said Scarborough coach Joe Hezlep. “We played much better than the Portland game. We came out and played inspired lacrosse for a long time. We didn’t allow our defense to get breaks, but they were exceptional. Yarmouth’s too good a team to not capitalize on mistakes.

“We knew we’d find out what we’re made of in this three-game stretch and I think we did. We got hammered at Portland and showed up today. We didn’t make enough plays, but we showed heart.”

After surviving an NYA-Portland-Yarmouth gauntlet, the Red Storm (4-2 and second in Western A) see their schedule lighten up a bit going forward. After hosting South Portland Friday, Scarborough is home with Freeport Monday and visits Cheverus Wednesday.

Western B power Cape Elizabeth was at North Yarmouth Academy Wednesday.

Girls’ lacrosse: Red Riots get initial wins

On the girls’ side, South Portland is also turning it around. The Red Riots lost their first two games under new coach Bill Fenton, but beat host Windham 13-4 last Wednesday behind senior Annie King’s three goals. After losing a shootout, 15-12, at Bonny Eagle Friday, South Portland squeaked past visiting Freeport 8-7 Tuesday to improve to 2-3. King had the game winner late in the second half. The Red Riots (11th in the Western A Heals) are idle until Tuesday when they play at Portland.

Scarborough has run into the top teams in the state in recent games and will be happy to get on to an easier portion of its schedule. After losing 12-9 at NYA last Tuesday, the Red Storm fell 10-7 at home to Yarmouth last Thursday. Scarborough got back in the win column Monday, 15-3, against visiting Marshwood (junior Lindsay Hagerman had four goals and four assists), but Tuesday, at defending Class B champion Waynflete, the Red Storm fell behind 11-3 at halftime and couldn’t rally, losing 18-6 despite three goals from junior Ellie Morin. Scarborough (3-3 and eighth in Western A) goes to York Friday and plays host to Falmouth Tuesday.

In Western B, Cape Elizabeth sandwiched wins over Greely (13-9) and Cheverus (15-6) around a 13-10 loss at NYA. Against the Rangers, sophomore Anna Darling had four goals and two assists. Senior Maggie Darling went off for six goals in the win over the Stags. The Capers (4-2 and third in Western B) face two stern tests next week when they host Yarmouth Tuesday and Waynflete Thursday.

Track: Red Storm win again

Scarborough’s girls’ outdoor track juggernaut won another meet Tuesday, beating Massabesic, Sanford, McAuley and Portland. The boys competed at Portland Wednesday.

South Portland’s girls were third behind host Thornton Academy and Windham and came in ahead of Windham Tuesday. The boys were at Windham Wednesday.

A 4-1 win at Deering Monday allowed the South Portland boys (sixth in Western A) to even their mark at 3-3. The Red Riots girls’ team (ranked 10th) fell to 3-4 Tuesday after a 3-2 home loss to Windham.
