SOUTH PORTLAND — Southern Maine Community College will mark the inauguration of its third president, Dr. Ronald Cantor, on Friday, May 4.

The 10 a.m. ceremony, featuring a speech by former U.S. Sen. George Mitchell, will begin two days of events, including a reception with food by the college’s culinary arts students, a symposium of Maine business leaders and an alumni gathering – all Friday – and a 5k fundraising run on Saturday morning.

Cantor assumed the presidency of the 66-year-old college last August. Before coming to Maine, he was associate vice president and dean at Mohawk Valley Community College in Utica, N.Y.

Saturday’s “Fun Run” will benefit the President’s Fund, which provides emergency financial aid to students. Registration takes place at the college at 9 a.m. Saturday and costs $25. The race begins at 10 a.m.
