SOUTH PORTLAND — Southern Maine Community College is hosting an event May 16 to bring attention to its public safety programs and celebrate the thousands of first responders trained at the school.

“A Light on the Point” will also recognize several anniversaries, including the Fire Science program’s 50th year and the Maine Fire Service Institute’s 70th year.

“It’s hard to go into any police or fire department here in Maine without finding an alumni of our community college working there,” SMCC Director of Communications Clarke Canfield said. “People go into these fields because they want to make a difference. … This event aims to bring them together.”

Food and drinks will be served starting at 5 p.m. in the Oceanview Dining Hall on 95 Campus Center Drive. A silent auction will also be held.

Tickets cost $25 per person, with discounts available for larger groups. Proceeds from the event will benefit student scholarships, public safety programs and the SMCC Foundation.
