Southern Maine Community College announced Tuesday that Katie Bergeron will become the seventh head coach in the history of the women’s basketball program. Bergeron was a standout at Bowdoin College, eclipsing the 1,000-career points mark. She played and coached in England and Denmark and most recently served as Lynne Hasson’s assistant on a South Portland girls’ basketball squad which reached the Class AA South Final.
“I was extremely impressed with Katie during the interview process and feel she will not only lead the program in a successful manner, but will also be an outstanding role model to her players and the other student-athletes within the department,” said athletic director and men’s basketball coach Matt Richards.
Bergeron, who replaces Julia Howe, said she’s looking forward to the opportunity to lead a team which went 21-9, matching a program record for wins in a season, in 2015-16.
“I’m very excited,” Bergeron said. “I’m extremely passionate about Maine basketball and coaching, developing and mentoring young women and I’m eager to start my college coaching career at an institution that focuses on preparing and empowering their students for success after college.”
