Several Southern Maine Community College fall athletes were recently named to the Yankee Small College Conference All-Academic team.

The student-athletes were selected for outstanding academic performances, maintaining a 3.2 grade point average with at least 12 credits.

The men’s soccer team placed five players on the All-Academic squad, including freshman forward Jonathon D’Haiti of South Portland, freshman forward Jake Freeman, junior midfielder Kyle Ehlers, junior midfielder Adam Burpee of South Portland and senior defenseman James Wurgler.

The women’s squad also produced five All-Academic team members. That list featured freshman midfielder Erica Desjardins, freshman goalie Katryna Gilson of South Portland, freshman defender Shannon Blanchard, sophomore midfielder Emily Bard and sophomore midfielder Bethany Gullbrand.

Freshman golfer Chris Pierce also was named to the team.

Last week, women’s basketball player Yaritza Tejada was named to the United States Collegiate Athletic Association All-Academic team after maintaining a 3.59 GPA.

On the field, the SMCC baseball team began its spring schedule Monday with a 7-4 loss to Thomas Nelson Community College in Hampton, Va. Jeremy Gearty did hit a home run in the setback. Including fall play, the Seawolves are 11-6-1 overall and 3-1 in conference. SMCC is working its way north and will open home play March 23 versus Eastern Maine CC.
