SCARBOROUGH — Older, disabled and home-bound military veterans in need of assistance in Cumberland and York counties will be able to get help from younger veterans through a new program launched by the Southern Maine Agency on Aging.

The Veterans Helping Veterans program under development by VISTA volunteer Susan Gold seeks to match younger veterans with older ones still living at home. The volunteers will make in-person visits, check-in phone calls, assist in getting available benefits and services, and possibly coordinate larger volunteer projects, such as home yard work or winterization.

The agency said volunteer recruitment will begin later this spring, and Gold hopes the program will be fully operating by late summer. To recommend a veteran who would benefit from the program, call Gold at 396-6500, ext. 600, or email sgold@smaaa.org.
