PORTLAND — The Portland Water District is reminding businesses and residents to only flush human waste and toilet paper down their drains.

The reminder comes as wastewater treatment facilities are again being overwhelmed by unprocessable material, including discarded shrimp parts.

Last year, discarded shrimp parts wrecked havoc at the East End Treatment Facility and pump stations, clogging equipment and halting processes, PWD spokeswoman Michelle Clements said. Hundreds of pounds of shrimp parts were estimated to have been removed last year.

PWD partnered with the city to reach out to shrimp processing plants. During city inspections, no violations were discovered and the source of the problem remains a mystery, Clements said.
