FALMOUTH — Shirly Marie Dumont, 89, died Nov. 12 at Falmouth by the Sea.

Born Dec. 18, 1921 in Skowhegan, she was the daughter of Adrian Frank and Estelle Fortier Turcotte. She graduated from Skowhegan High School and attended Catholic University in Washington, D.C., later receiving her registered nursing degree at St. Mary’s School of Nursing in Lewiston.

During World War II, Dumont served as a First Lieutenant Nurse, stationed in the Philippines.

On June 2. 1946, she married Gabriel Oliver Dumont in Skowhegan at Notre Dame de Lourdes and began raising her family. During her nursing career, Dumont worked at Redington-Fairview Hospital and for Dr. Richard Laney in Skowhegan and Dr. John Knowles of Portland. She and her husband also lived in Port Charlotte, Fla. before moving back to Maine in 2004.

Dumont was an avid sports enthusiast and excelled in playing tennis and basketball. She loved watching all sports with her grandchildren, who were the light of her life.

She is survived by her husband Gabriel; daughters, Barbara Bene and her husband Herbert Michael of Venice, Fla. and Martha Estelle Dumont of New York, N.Y.; son, Gabriel O. Dumont, Jr. and his wife Christine of Boston, Mass.; brother, Adrian Turcotte of San Diego, Calif.; three grandchildren, John Gabriel Dillman, Sophie Estelle Dillman and Thomas Adrian Dillman.

The family wishes to express their deep appreciation to the staff of Falmouth by the Sea for their loving care and devotion.

Services for Dumont will be private and burial will take place at the Maine Veterans Memorial Cemetery. Arrangements by Conroy-Tully Crawford Funeral Home, 172 State St., Portland. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Falmouth by the Sea, 191 Foreside Road, Falmouth, Maine 04105.
