YARMOUTH — Shirley White Babb, 92, of North Yarmouth, died May 3.

She was born in Portland on Aug. 6, 1918, the daughter of William J. and Hermie Brand White.

In 1937 she graduated with honors from South Portland High School, and progressed on to Westbrook Junior College, graduating in the class of 1940.

For a many years she worked as a secretary for the South Portland High School principal and later for the English department at the University of Maine Orono.

She traveled extensively with her Navy husband, James R. Babb, who predeceased her in August 1996. In her free time she was a member of the Portland Yacht Club, the Washington National Cathedral, and a life member of the Wives of Submarine Veterans of World War II.

She is survived by her nephews Henry G. and Edmund B. Beyer, her niece Sherrie Singer and her niece-in-law Robin Singer.

A memorial service will be held at St. Bartholomew’s Episcopal Church, 396 Gilman Road, Yarmouth at a later time.
