PORTLAND — City elections in November could be a quiet affair, with several elections uncontested unless write-in candidates appear.

Nomination papers were due at the city clerk’s office Monday, Aug. 24, for candidates to be on the Nov. 3 ballot.

Of the three City Council seats available, only District 1 has a race. Councilor Kevin Donoghue is seeking a second, three-year term, and is being challenged by political newcomer Charles Bragdon. Both contestants are Munjoy Hill residents. District 1 represents the East End and the islands.

In District 2, Councilor David Marshall is uncontested for re-election. Marshall is running for a second term representing the West End and Parkside.

Although three other city residents took out papers, Councilor Nick Mavodones was the only candidate to turn in nomination papers for the at-large councilor seat. The clerk’s office was still verifying signatures Tuesday for Mavodones, who is seeking a fourth term.

Jenna Vendil is the only candidate for the District 1 School Committee seat. Vendil lives on Munjoy Hill and has been active in local and state political campaigns. Current District 1 board member Rebecca Minnick is not seeking re-election.

The District 2 School Committee seat now held by Robert O’Brien has two candidates, Edward Bryan of Cushman Street and Anthony Zeli, a Congress Street resident. O’Brien, who was elected to the Charter Commission in June, is not seeking re-election.

Sarah Thompson has no challengers for the at-large School Committee seat. Thompson is finishing up her first term on the board.

Peaks Island residents stepped up in the final week nomination papers were available, although the races for Peaks Island Council will not be contested. Marjorie Phyfe and Ruth Heller are running for the seats currently held by Betsy Stout and Tom Bohan. Bohan and Suellen Roberts are seeking to replace Mike Langella and Bob Hurley, both of whom stepped down from the council a year before their terms were up.

Kenneth Levinsky and Oliver Outerbridge are running against each other for a one-year term on the Portland Water District Board of Trustees.
