PORTLAND — School Board member Holly Seeliger was appointed to serve on the Mayor’s Initiative for Healthy Sustainable Food Systems.

School Board President Sarah Thompson made the announcement last week, saying that Seeliger had expressed an interest in the subject. Seeliger will join the 20-member committee, which includes food purveyors, politicians and community members.

The committee, which was formed last year, seeks to foster composting programs, community gardens, the availability of healthy foods at schools and more.

Seeliger was elected to the School Board in 2012. She has been an outspoken critic of the city’s proposal to sell Congress Square Park, a supporter of the Occupy Movement and has gained widespread attention for her performances as a burlesque dancer.
