Scarborough baseball players win district title
Jul 21, 2010 12:20 pmThe Scarborough 9/10-year-old "Red" All-Stars recently won the District 6 championship, beating Falmouth, 6-4, in the title game. The team advanced to compete in the state tournament in Hermon.

Local players lead Southern Maine Flame team to tourney title
Jul 20, 2010 12:00 amThe U-16 Southern Maine Flame red softball team won the U-18 bracket of the recent Eric Whitten tournament at the Wainright Field Complex in South Portland. The team featured Ally Boyington and Lauren Nicholson from Cape Elizabeth, Alana Peoples from Scarborough, Katlin Norton from South Portland, Heather Fecteau, Sarah Gilblair and Kayla Daigle from Biddeford, Jen Fields from Windham, Julie Dursema and Abbie Hutchinson from Yarmouth, Amelia Hutchinson from Nobleboro and Sam Shildroth from Hollis.
NYA's top spring athletes named
Jul 20, 2010 12:00 amAfter another very successful spring sports season, which included a pair of state championships, North Yarmouth Academy recently gave out honors to its top athletes from the campaign.
Girls' varsity lacrosse, coached by Julia Sterling, with assistance from Mike Gengras, Jenna McCabe and Lynn Sullivan, won its first Class B title. The team gave its Coaches' Award to junior Lily Wellenbach and named senior Courtney Dumont its Most Valuable Player.
The JV squad, coached by Gengras, named freshman Hannah Hearn MVP. Junior Lauren Nawfel got the Coaches' Award.
Freeport spring standouts honored
Jul 20, 2010 12:00 amFreeport recently bestowed awards on its top spring athletes.
The baseball team gave its Heart of the Falcons award to Spencer Egan. Jared Knighton won the Falcon Pride award. Connor Dietrich took home the Booster's Pride and Character Award.
The junior varsity baseball team gave Athletic Excellence awards to Dan Burke and Thomas Cyr, while D.J. Mooney won the Booster's Pride and Character award.
Softball's Most Valuable Player was Leigh Wyman. Jessica Kane was named Most Improved Player. Whitney Bibeau took home the Booster's Pride and Character award.

Local riders place first at Youth Dressage Festival
Jul 19, 2010 10:10 amPortland's Faith Duplinsky (with horse, Maradona, far right), North Yarmouth's Ali Perkins (with O'Doull, second from left) and Falmouth's Katarina Keller (with Lakoda, middle), joined South Berwick's Eileen Stirling (with Joey, second from right) and owner/trainer Amanda Gervais of Durgin Farm in Standish (far left) at the recent Youth Dressage Festival in Saugerties, N.Y. The girls, competing as a team against 251 riders from the United States, Canada, France and Brazil, won the championship with their combined scores in two riding tests and also a written test.
