  • From Peaks to Portland, to English Channel

FREEPORT — Pat Gallant-Charette of Westbrook never thought she would call herself a marathon swimmer at the age of 59 – much less the third fastest woman to swim the Strait of Gilbraltar since 1928 and the fastest woman from the U.S.

Gallant-Charette's swimming career began twelve years ago when her son, Tom, told her he wanted to do the 2.4-mile Peaks to Portland swim in honor of his Uncle Robbie, Gallant-Charette's brother, who died suddenly of a heart attack at 34 years old.

  • Firecrackers finish 11th at AAU nationals

Olivia Smith of Yarmouth gets the opening tip for the U-13 Firecrackers girls' basketball team in its pool play final versus the Kentucky state champions at the AAU national tournament in Ohio. The Firecrackers won, 52-49, and advanced to the championship pool, where they finished 11th out of 58 teams. The Firecrackers went 5-2, beating teams from Maryland, Delaware, Ohio, in addition to Kentucky.

  • City baseball teams going strong

Along with the summer weather, local Legion and Babe Ruth baseball teams are sizzling and chasing championship glory.

Once again, the Deering High-populated (with a couple Cape Elizabeth kids mixed in) Nova Seafood American Legion baseball team is in the hunt for a state title.

Last week, Nova won the Zone 4 championship. After a 15-3 regular season gave it the top seed for the playoffs, Nova downed Stockhouse, 7-4, and Libby-Mitchell, 6-4, to win the title.

    West falls in Lobster Bowl

Despite a touchdown from former Portland High star Jake Alexander, the West team lost Saturday's Maine Shrine Lobster Bowl Classic, 40-35. The East won for the fourth time in five seasons, thanks to a 21-point outburst in the final period, which erased a nine-point deficit. Cheverus lineman Mickey O'Brion and defensive end Matt Place and Deering defensive back Travis Wade also participated.

  • Birdies for the Brave helps military

Donna Chapman proudly notes that her uncle was a lance corporal in the U.S. Marines. Likewise, four of her great-uncles served in the U.S. military. When the Windham woman's opportunity to help those, like her uncles, who defend the United States, came along, she jumped at the chance.

"My grandmother worked in the South Portland shipyard during World War ll," said Chapman, president of the New England Chapter of Operation Homefront. "So, I guess I like to think my grandmother did her part and I am doing mine as a civilian."

  • Women's basketball blooms in the summer

Summer in Maine provides opportunities you just don’t find at any other time of year. This includes women’s basketball where summertime provides a chance for recent high school graduates and current college players to play with some of the best in the state.
