  • Falmouth cross country teams ready to eye glory

    (Ed. Note: Johnny Lake is a senior at Falmouth High School and will be contributing periodic reports on the Yachtsmen's cross country team and the sport in general during the upcoming season)

    As the temperatures begin to subside and preseason practices begin for high school sports statewide, I find myself confronted with my second and final Falmouth High School cross country season.

  • Plenty of reasons, opportunities to follow UMaine football in 2010

    Word on the street is that the 2010 University of Maine Black Bears football team is going to be a handful.

    Most of a solid 2009 defense returns, while the offense has been repaired with the return of Lewiston fullback Jared Turcotte, a freshman All-America selection who missed all of last season.

  • Golfing with a Hall of Famer

    It was another beautiful day in a summer that has provided so many.

    Clayton “Tuna” Anderson, the pride of North Yarmouth’s Toddy Brook Golf Course and multi-time Toddy club champion, stood sheepishly on the fifth tee at Salem (Mass.) Country Club.

    The single-digit handicapper had opened the first four holes of the historic, 115-year-old club – that has hosted five national championships, most recently the 2001 U.S. Senior Open — with an uncharacteristic double-bogey, bogey, bogey and bogey.

    Maine Premier Lax offers fall league

    Maine Premier Lacrosse will offer its high school fall league Sundays through Oct. 31 at Memorial Field at Deering High in Portland. Girls play from 6 to 7 p.m., boys from 7 to 9. The cost is $160, which includes team jerseys. FMI, 671-2421 or mainepremierlax.com.

  • Yarmouth LL baseball team wins crown

    Yarmouth Little League (ages 8-10) won the Boys of Summer AAA Championship with a 9-7 victory over Deering. Yarmouth finished the season with a 10-1 record.

    Falmouth golf tryout schedule

    Falmouth golf team tryouts are as follows: Thursday at 5 p.m., Friday at 7:30 a.m. and Monday at 5 p.m. All sessions will be held at the Woodlands. Proper golf attire is required.

    Frozen Ropes tryouts

    The Frozen Ropes Baseball and Softball Training Center will be conducting tryouts for their Jr. Black Bear 12U, 14U, 16U and 18U travel softball teams on Sunday. The tryouts will be held at Springbrook Park in Scarborough. 12U and 14U tryouts will be at 9 a.m., 14U at 11:30 a.m. and the 18U tryouts will be at 1:30 p.m. The Jr. Black Bear program is overseen by Lynn Coutts.     Coastal Humane Society hosting fundraiser

    Coastal Humane Society in Brunswick will host the Coastal Humane Society Golf Classic “Fore Paws,” Monday at the Brunswick Golf Club. All proceeds raised will benefit the homeless animals at CHS. The tournament will be a scramble format with a shotgun start at 8:30 a.m. Cost to play is $150 per player ($600 per 4-person team). FMI, coastalhumanesociety.org or 725-5051.
